How to Match Correct Tooth Count Per Inch for Solid Bar, Tubing and Profiles

 

Many metal working workshops focus only on saw blade material and cutting speed, yet overlook TPI (teeth per inch) tooth pitch selection, which is a primary source of chipped teeth, chip clogging, wandering cuts and unexpected blade breakdown.

 

Observe the 3‑12 tooth engagement rule strictly. For thick solid bars such as 42CrMo, GCr15 and carbon steel, choose coarser pitch to secure sufficient chip space inside gullets and avoid chip packing. When cutting thin wall steel pipes, profiles or sheet stacks, switch to finer or variable pitch blades. Too coarse teeth will hook thin walls, triggering tooth stripping and vibration marked cutting surfaces.

 

Variable pitch blades deliver obvious advantages for mixed section workpieces, reducing resonance and cutting chatter. Always adjust tooth pitch according to real workpiece cross section rather than applying fixed parameters blindly. Improper TPI setting will waste high quality M42 or M51 bi‑metal blades, even with perfect speed feed setup.
