When it comes to cutting metal on a bandsaw, choosing between a bi-metal blade and a TCT (tungsten carbide tipped) blade comes down to what you cut and how often you cut it. Both have their place, and picking the wrong one will cost you in blade life and cut quality.
What Bi-Metal Blades Do Best
Bi-metal blades - typically M42 or M51 high speed steel teeth electron beam welded to a spring steel back - are the workhorse of general metal cutting. They handle carbon steel, alloy steel, and even some stainless at a reasonable cost. The flexibility of the bi-metal construction makes them forgiving on less rigid machines and mixed production runs. If your shop cuts a variety of materials and changes setups frequently, a bi-metal blade is usually the practical starting point.
When to Step Up to TCT
TCT band saw blades step in when bi-metal reaches its limit. Carbide tips stay sharp at higher cutting speeds and handle harder materials - stainless steel, tool steel, titanium, and nickel-based alloys that would dull an HSS tooth quickly. The tradeoff is cost and brittleness. TCT blades demand proper feed rates, steady coolant flow, and a rigid machine. Run them too hard or on a sloppy saw, and you will chip teeth faster than a bi-metal blade would wear out.
The Short Version
