HSS & TCT Circular Saw Blades: Material Selection, Tooth Design & Precision Control for Industrial Cutting

Circular saw blades are core consumables in metal fabrication, widely used for cutting thin steel, metal profiles, composite sheets and various construction materials. The overall cutting performance, service life and finished cut quality depend heavily on three key factors: blade substrate material, tooth configuration and geometric precision. Selecting a proper saw blade according to workpiece properties and machine conditions helps manufacturers reduce downtime, lower tool replacement cost and achieve consistent production output. Two mainstream blade categories dominate industrial metal cutting applications: high-speed steel (HSS) circular saw blades and tungsten carbide tipped (TCT) saw blades. Each comes with unique material characteristics and applicable scenarios.

 

High speed steel (HSS) circular saw blades remain a cost efficient workhorse for many metal processing workshops. HSS features good toughness and easy re-sharpening capability. It can be machined into diverse tooth profiles and variable tooth combinations to suit different cutting tasks. When designing dense tooth HSS blades, tooth strength must be prioritized. For the common dimension 350×3.5×32, our engineering team recommends Z160 as the practical maximum tooth count for HSS production. A Z180 configuration is not viable for HSS manufacturing. With 180 teeth, the tooth tip becomes excessively thin and fragile; friction heat and cutting force will cause rapid abrasion, chipping and early failure during operation. The Z160 design strikes a balanced compromise: enough teeth for smooth, low burr cuts while retaining sufficient tooth strength and heat resistance for continuous operation.

Even with optimized tooth design, HSS has inherent material limits. HSS will gradually lose its hardness under sustained high cutting temperature. Operators need to control feed rate properly to avoid overheating, material adhesion and edge damage. Regular professional re sharpening is required to restore cutting sharpness and maximize blade service life. HSS blades fit medium batch production requirements and customers seeking reliable performance with controlled procurement budgets. We offer a complete range of HSS blade sizes, including 275mm, 315mm, 350mm, 425mm and 450mm, and support custom compound tooth profiles to match different cutting requirements.

TCT carbide tipped circular saw blades represent the premium solution for demanding industrial cutting. Hard alloy tips maintain high hardness at elevated temperatures and deliver far superior wear resistance compared to HSS. For the 350×3.5×32 specification, TCT blades can be manufactured with Z180 ultra-fine teeth. This dense-tooth design delivers extremely smooth cutting surfaces and minimizes edge burr, suitable for applications requiring high-precision finished cuts. TCT blades withstand longer continuous cutting cycles and need far less frequent sharpening, which reduces production line stoppages. The main consideration is higher unit price. TCT blades are preferred for high-volume automated production lines where stable cut quality and minimal downtime are top priorities.

Axial runout, also known as lateral tolerance, is a critical precision indicator for circular saw blades. For our 350mm diameter blades, we strictly control axial runout measured at the outer edge within ≤0.20 mm. Tight lateral tolerance effectively reduces vibration during cutting, ensures straight cuts and eliminates extra friction that damages workpiece edges and accelerates blade wear. Every blade undergoes strict inspection for flatness, runout and tooth geometry before shipment.
