M42 and M51 are the two most widely used HSS tooth tip grades for bi‑metal band saw blades. Improper grade selection often leads to premature tooth chipping, unexpected blade breakage and higher overall processing costs for metal working workshops.
M42 features 8% cobalt with hardness of HRC 67‑69. It delivers balanced toughness and competitive cost performance, ideal for mass cutting of carbon steel, low alloy steel and general‑grade stainless steel for general‑purpose production.
M51 contains 10% cobalt for superior hot hardness and wear resistance, reaching HRC 69‑71. It performs remarkably on hard to machine workpieces such as H13, Cr12MoV, hot work die steel and heat‑resistant alloys, greatly reducing thermal wear on cutting edges.
Quick reference guideline: Choose M42 for regular steel cutting. Go for M51 if you frequently process high hardness or abrasive materials. Note that tooth pitch, blade tension, break in procedure and coolant also strongly influence service life.
